Mathematics
Vision
Love Math, Love Learning Math
Teaching Approach
In Townsville, the learning of Math takes into cognizance our learners’ profiles, the innovations in pedagogies and affordance of technologies.
In our classrooms, we focus on providing students with learning experiences that encompasses the use of the Gradual Release of Responsibility model (GRR). This is done through Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) and Polya’s UPDC thinking tool to ensure our students’ holistic development.
1. Make Connections
Townsville students from Primary 4 to 6 had the opportunity to take part in various Math competitions organised by Hwa Chong Institution, NUS High School and Raffles Institution.
In 2024, 13 of our students received awards ranging from High Distinction / Gold to Honourable Mention / Bronze. Through these competitions, we aim to
· generate greater interest and enthusiasm for Mathematics among our students
· sharpen their problem-solving skills
· provide an avenue to challenge and stretch our students’ mathematical potential
· nurture and recognise our budding mathematical talents

Making Thinking Visible: Nurturing Problem-Solvers and Communicators
At Townsville, we're committed to developing confident problem-solvers and effective communicators. Our innovative approach to mathematics education focuses on making students' thinking visible, enhancing both their understanding of key concepts and their mathematical competencies.
Our Strategy:
-
Reasoning and Communication Tasks
Students engage with carefully designed activities that challenge them to:
-
Articulate their mathematical thinking
-
Express ideas in various forms
-
Develop strong reasoning skills
-
Collaborative Learning
We create opportunities for students to:
-
Discuss mathematical concepts with peers
-
Share diverse problem-solving approaches
-
Learn from one another's perspectives
-
Teacher-Guided Scaffolding
Our experienced educators support learning by:
-
Introducing and reinforcing mathematical language
-
Guiding students towards deeper understanding
-
Encouraging precise and clear communication
-
Learning Experiences:
These specially designed tasks:
-
Activate prior knowledge
-
Promote productive struggle
-
Encourage perseverance in problem-solving
-
Foster a collaborative learning environment
By making thinking visible, we empower our students to become more than just proficient in mathematics—we cultivate critical thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and articulate communicators ready for the challenges of the future.
